Sport Matters Group Applauds Inaugral National Heath & Fitness Day

Sport Matters Group Applauds Inaugral National Heath & Fitness Day

MP John Weston launches National Health & Fitness Day on June 2nd, 2012

Ottawa, Ontario (May 30, 2012) – The Sport Matters Group applauds the efforts of MP John Weston and fellow members of the Parliamentary Fitness Initiative to launch National Health & Fitness day on June 2nd, 2012. This day will serve to encourage all Canadians to pursue healthier lifestyles by increasing their participation in physical activity, recreation and sport.
Mr. Weston has worked with local government and other partners to create a day dedicated to celebrating health and fitness and encouraging Canadians to be physically active. Mr. Weston will be engaged in a number of activities in his riding that day. A Private Member’s Bill will also be introduced in the House of Commons afterward.
“SMG strongly supports federally-led initiatives such as the annual National Health & Fitness Day”, said Chris Jones, Senior Leader of the Sport Matters Group. “I want to commend the tireless work that John has done with his colleagues, Peter Stoffer, M.P., Kirsty Duncan, M.P. and Pascal-Pierre Paille, M.P. to promote the benefits of physical activity with Members of Parliament from all sides of the House. These events reflect our Parliamentarians’ understanding of the benefits of sport and physical activity for Canada. We are currently facing an inactivity crisis. Canadians are increasingly sedentary and face growing levels of obesity and related chronic illness. Participation in sport and physical activity can help Canadians get physically fit, thereby increasing their overall health and ultimately reducing skyrocketing health care costs. We would encourage all Canadians to get active on June 2nd, in recognition of National Health & Fitness Day.”

    Ask a Dietitian:
Q: I was just asked by a swim club coach about nut allergies and if there is a policy anywhere. I coach synchro swimming -- when I fill out the meet information there is a statement that the meet is peanut free. When I was judging diving recently there was a jar of peanut butter available to use. So, I see that there is no general policy yet. It is a very delicate subject, but are we excluding people because they are very allergic? Then, there is the fact that as sports we only rent space in facilities so really it must up to them to have a policy?

Q: My 12-year-old daughter is a competitive swimmer. Her coach tells the team they should avoid dairy products and peanut butter the day before, and the day of, the competition as it causes excess mucus and may interfere with proper breathing. Is there any validity to this rule? I find it limits her choice of meals and snacks.

Question: My 15-year-old daughter plays a high level of hockey and frequently runs out of gas during competition. I have been reading all of the nutrition articles on the coach.ca website and find it very educational, and somewhat overwhelming!! Wow! Is there a template for properly tracking her food and hydration intake? It seems to me that if she can see what she is consuming and when, she would be more likely to improve her habits.

Youth Program in Newfoundland/Labrador

Coaches on left Chanda Ward and Keith Fitzpatrick, coaches on the right, Kathy Cull, Greg Richards and Sarah Ward. Manager Lavinia Crisby receiving donation from Norman Cull, funds from the Wallace Cull Broomball tournment.
He was a committed broomball coach and organizer of the sport who passed away suddenly at a very young age. Mr. Cull, spokesman for the Cull family donated $1400+ to our league that was raised during the tournament. We have also secured $1000. from the Northern Wellness Coalition to buy equipment that will allow children to try our sport.
I was a very dedicted fan as a teenager, but never played.."how could I get this to work" I wondered. I knew the junior broomball was very active so I asked some of the players to coach for me. They were all for it....I contacted Maddie Ollerhead to ask about gear and her support was wonderful. Right away she set up to have BF2 trainnig and a dozen or so of us took it. From there I got very talented and dedicated coaches. From there we took off.

Broomball Canada sends congratulations on the success of building a youth broomball program in the Newfoundland/Labrador area. The following article and pictures were sent by "Broomball Mom" Lavinia Crisby.
As a Mom I wanted my son Connor to enjoy a winter sport and I knew how much he enjoyed ball hockey during the summer. He didn't enjoy skating so hockey was a challenge... I knew broomball could work.

Tim Hortons donated jerseys to the team and this is their first time supporting broomball accross Canada!
The jerseys hab the logo we had from the orginal Raiders team coached by Mr. Wallace Cull amdhis name is on every jersey as well. The first year we had about 12 kids on a regular basis, this year it has doubled and with the exposure at the junior provincials we expect it to grow again next year. It worked for my son Connor--he loves it and so does everyone who has come to try. We will continue to grow and we will make it to the nationals!

We are committed to doing whatever it takes to make broomball big in our area again!

Follow us today!Exciting changes made to the NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills programEighteen months ago, the NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) program was born. A great program that fits into the FUNdamentals stage of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), it has since been delivered to hundreds of coaches, teachers, high school students, camp counsellors, day care workers and community centre employees across Canada. The workshop focuses on a training process to teach leaders of youth how to observe fundamental movement skills in young children and how to help them advance to mature stages of the fundamental movement skills. Children who are primary school age need to learn fundamental movement skills such as running, catching, kicking to name a few, before they can begin to learn the fundamental sport skills. Having these skills will give them the confidence to participate in sport and to continue to be active for life which can also help to decrease obesity levels and increase the health of our children.Over the last year, research on the program was conducted and revisions were made to this already great resource. The NEW NCCP FMS Workshop still teaches the same training process but adds in how to practice and adapt the fundamentals through age and stage appropriate games. A new DVD has been created to supplement the workshop and provides the visuals needed to help leaders really understand this stage of LTAD.
Last month, a Master Learning Facilitator (MLF) from each province attended an FMS update to see how to best deliver FMS in their province and to see the new revisions. This dedicated team of MLFs encourages all sports to consider adding the NCCP FMS program to their coach pathway or to consider using the FMS program as professional development in the maintenance of their coach education program. For more information about this program, please contact your Provincial/Territorial Coaching Representative using this link http://coach.ca/-p140497.
“The Locker” – October update
Work on the cleaning and loading of NCCP coach data is on schedule and is anticipated to be completed by early November. Once we are confident that nothing is being lost in the move we, at the CAC, will begin entering CRFs in The Locker instead of the current NCCP database. This will be the actual launch of The Locker.

Myths abound when it comes to women in the coaching profession. Over the years, the Canadian Journal for Women in Coaching has tackled all of them, from the one that suggests that marriage and children spell an end to a coaching career to the one that positions the woman coach as (too) emotional.
In this issue, the Journal disproves yet another myth, the one about women coaches lacking the ability, knowledge, and commitment to successfully coach male high performance athletes. Their numbers may be small, but they do exist and flourish, as author Claire Carver-Dias discovered.

CAC Commends Harper Government for Investment in Sports Injury Prevention

OTTAWA (March 16, 2011) – The Coaching Association of Canada, as the leader of coach education and training in Canada, commends the Harper Government for investing in sport and recreation injury prevention for children and youth.
“Coaches play a key role in injury prevention for Canada’s children and youth,” said John Bales, CEO of CAC. “They are on the front lines on the playing fields, at the hockey arenas and wherever sport is played. Educated and certified coaches are better equipped to teach children correct technique, proper training principles and fair and ethical sport. They are also instrumental in insuring safety on the field of play. We applaud the government of Canada for investing in this initiative.” The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), and Senator Larry Smith announced the funding today on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health. The Government of Canada is providing $5 million over two years to support injury prevention initiatives that reach Canadian children and youth in the communities where they live and play. With a focus on preventing major injuries such as concussions, drowning and fractures, this new investment will leverage the work and networks of non-governmental organizations to promote the safety of children and youth in high-participation activities such as hockey, snow sports, cycling and water sports.“Sport and recreation activities contribute to a significant number of injuries among children and youth, yet many of those injuries are predictable and preventable,” said Minister Lunn. “That’s why we’re investing in initiatives to reduce injuries while creating the conditions for active and safe play.”“Everyone has a role to play in preventing injury and helping children and youth have the healthiest possible start in life,” said Senator Smith. “Reducing the number and severity of injuries that occur in sports and recreational activities is not only possible, it’s imperative.”Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Health and of Health Promotion and Healthy Living and Ministers responsible for Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation have endorsed a Declaration on Prevention and Promotion, agreeing to work together and with others to make the promotion of health and the prevention of disease, disability and injury a priority. Ministers have also committed to working together to make the environments where children live, learn and play more supportive of physical activity. Promoting active and safe play builds on these commitments to ensure the health and safety of Canada’s children and youth.About the Coaching Association of Canada The Coaching Association of Canada unites stakeholders and partners in its commitment to raising the skills and stature of coaches, and ultimately expanding their reach and influence. Through its programs, CAC empowers coaches with knowledge and skills, promotes ethics, fosters positive attitudes, builds competence, and increases the credibility and recognition of coaches.
CHUNKY Sport Nutrition Tip of the Month

Ever wonder which drink is right for you and your needs? Confused by the numerous options out there? This month's CHUNKY Sport Nutrition Tip helps clarify exactly what's in the bottle by explaining the purpose and proper usage of the available options, from sports drinks to vitaminized water.
What’s in the Bottle? From Sports Drinks to Vitaminized Water
There is an ever-increasing variety of beverages in the store coolers these days. Some are targeting athletes and athlete wannabe’s; others sound like they’re healthy choices. Before you grab the best-tasting, or the one with all the hype, look to see what’s in the bottle and consider what it is you really need.
Are sports drinks just sugary beverages? In fact, there’s more to these drinks than just sugar. The science behind sports drinks technically defines them as carbohydrate electrolyte solutions designed specifically to replace energy (carbohydrates), electrolytes (e.g. sodium, potassium), and fluids lost as a result of physical exercise.
However, selecting a suitable sports drink isn’t always an easy task as the composition of these drinks can vary from product to product, especially their carbohydrate and sodium content. To make this even more confusing, there are a variety of beverages that may be perceived to be sports drinks, but technically are not designed to aid sport performance.
Click here to read the rest of the article. Proper nutrition is essential for overall good health and optimal athletic performance. The Coaching Association of Canada is pleased to send you this month's sport nutrition tip, brought to you by Campbell’s Chunky!

Broomball for Fun!

On the week of January 10-14th, the village of Fort Simpson, the Mackenzie Recreation Association, NWT Broomball, and Broomball Canada partnered together to run a BF2 event! We were thrilled to have the dynamic team of Georgina Reynolds and Conrad Morneau visit our beautiful community to share their skills, experience and enthusiasm.
This initiative is part of the Broomball For Fun Aboriginal Tour.It is designed to spark interest and support the sport of broomball in aboriginal communities.Broomball is a designated Heritage Sport in Canada, and is suitable for play in arenas or outdoor rinks. The basic skills can be quickly acquired, but the intricacies of the game and high level of mastery encourages life-long interest in the sport. As such, broomball is a great activity for children, youth, adults and elders alike!
The week began with the excitement of unpacking boxes of brooms, shoes, balls and coaching materials.Everything was there to jumpstart the fun!The coaching clinics were attended by a wide variety of people, including recreation facilitators, youth, parents and seniors. It was a great opportunity for intergenerational pleasure and learning. The program was so complete that even newcomers to the sport felt confident leading training sessions by the end of the week.
Part of the training included working with local teens and young adults. All interested junior high and senior high students in the village accessed the program during school hours.More games were scheduled for the evenings to allow other community members to join in on the physical activity and fun. This was a wonderful example of the positive opportunities that can be provided through collaboration. The equipment will remain in Fort Simpson for use by all the community, as will leadership skills and happy memories!
Mahsi cho to all the facilitators of this great experience!

SIGN OF THE TIMES!

As part of the 5 year Operating Plan, the CBF continued to research ideas to make changes in the way the CBF does business as a National Sport Organization. Consequently the first order of business was to change the identity for branding purposes and make it fit within the sport profile. The solution the Executive agreed on was a new logo and identity.

Initially, the change will be used for marketing purposes only. The Canadian Broomball Federation Inc will continue to be used for day to day business until such time the Board of Directors approves the changes.
We hope the membership approves of the new design and welcomes the changes for future broomball development. The branding will be part of the online merchandizing to be started at the beginning of the 2010/2011 season.

Skyservice Charter Receivership Update

Skyservice Charter Receivership Up Date June 28/10On June 4, 2010, I was finally successful contacting the Receiver appointed by the courts. The explanation I received was as follows:The Receiver is currently treating the CBF Claim as an unsecured claim. At this point in time they have no claim process in place until the court agrees to the proposed process by the Court Appointed Receiver. Once this has been approved the Receiver will send a Notice for Filing Proof of Claim to the CBF office. The Receiver explained to me there may be some recovery or payouts pending on how many filings take place. The figures for payout are substantially low, consequently, he advised not to expect anything or very much if there is a return. It’s a matter of waiting now for the court and information to be sent by the Receiver. The CBF will continue to keep those affected by the Skyservice shutdown informed as best as we can.
