Debden Roadrunners Secure 3rd Consecutive U20 Broomball Championship

Apr. 08, 2024

Debden Roadrunners Secure Third Consecutive win at U20 Broomball Championship in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba!

The broomball community in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, is abuzz with excitement as the Debden Roadrunners clinched their third consecutive championship title in a thrilling match on April 6th, 2024. The Roadrunners, known for their speed, agility, and precision on the ice, once again proved to be the dominant force in the sport. While their opponents from Ontario, Eastern Thunder finished first after the round robin play, the "Roadies" battled back to reach the highest honours in playoff play.

The championship match was a highly anticipated event, with fans packing the arena to cheer on the top two girls' teams in the country. The defending champs from Saskatchewan were up against the first place team from pool play, the Eastern Thunder from Ontario. From the opening face-off, it was clear that both teams were determined to claim victory. The intensity was palpable as players battled fiercely for possession of the ball.

The Roadrunners' opened the scoring in the first half with a goal by Faith Lamotte. They then doubled the scoring on a power play goal by Rhyan Amundson in the 2nd period to give them a confortable lead. Saskatchewan's defense was stellar, shutting down their opponents' scoring attempts time and again.

The Eastern Thunder was not going down without a fight, as they gave a final push at the end to cut the lead in half. They did so on a power play goal by Melanie Fogarty with three minutes left in the game. Although they did bring the pressure at the end, the 'Roadies' held off and secure their 3rd win in as many years.

The Roadrunners showcased their skill and teamwork all week, creating scoring opportunities with precise passes and strategic plays. Forward Rhyan Amundson emerged as the top scoring player for Debden and leading the Roadrunners to victory.

Debden's victory cements their status as one of the top broomball teams in the past decade in Canada. With three consecutive championships under their belt, they are already looking ahead to the next season, eager to defend their title and continue their winning streak as the Championship moves to Quebec.
